Part II - It's A Different City

It's A Different City

Date: Saturday, Jul 08, 2006
Place: Athens, Greece

It's been 13 years since last time I visited Athens, Greece.

Many things have changed in my life in these 13 years (though many things remain unchanged even though I wish them to).
Many things in Athens also have changed. Sometimes I feel I arrived at a different city. First of all, I arrived at a new airport, a more modern and organized airport. Then, there is Athens' new metro(subway) system I hopped on. I think getting to host an Olympic Game does help a city to develop much better infrastructure and hence improves its mass transit system (though Atlanta's mass transit system still sucks after its own Olympics). Of course, most familiar things associated to Athens are still around: Acropolis, Constitution Square (and those soldiers still wearing ballet skirts and funny shoes with pompom). Even the hotel I stayed 13 years ago, Hotel Olympics, is still around.

On the date I left Taipei, I found another shuttle bus traveling between Athens and Corfu Island. It is operated by the Pink Palace Hotel (www.thepinkpalace.com). The hotel complex is described by Lonely Planet Greece as "considered the must-do hassel-free party palace for those on the European backpacker circuit." and "like a 20-somethings' summer camp." It sounds like some place for me, 10 years ago.

The bus leaves from a youth hostel in Athens at 8 pm and arrives around 6:30 am next day directly to the hostel in Corfu. Its 55 Euro price tag includes the bus ride, ferry fare, one night's hotel stay (which itself includes both breakfast and dinner). Well, should I try it? Corfu is one of the most popular Greek islands and of course it is very touristy. But it should be a more relaxing first stop for this long trip than Tirana, Albania.

Walking towards Athens train station, I accidentally found the postings for buses traveling from Athens to Tirana, Albania (finally, there is one!). Though the posting is only in Greek and Albanian, the lady at front desk does speak some English. the bus is also an overnight bus leaving at 8 pm and arrives in Tirana next morning (though I doubt it is more likely arriving in the afternoon...)

So both overnight buses leave Athens at 8 pm tonight. And where should I go to first? Go to the party parade in Corfu? Or being an intrepid traveler, going to less visited Albania. Decision, decision...

Walking around the Plaka Distrct of Athens, I found a great restaurant to have some tasty souvalaki (1.5 Euro if take-out). Some fond memories about Athens came back from 13 years ago. Walking around Athens this afternoon, I can rekindle these sweet memories from 13 years ago.

I do not need to make a decision for my next destination for another few hours...

Part I - Leaving for Europe

Leaving for Europe

Date: Friday, Jul 07, 2006
Place: Taipei, Taiwan

My flight leaves at 8pm, so there is still time to do some shopping around at daytime.

Well, what happen is that I haven't even made any hotel reservation for my first stop (Athens) because I am not certain about my exact plan yet (and didn't tell my parents about that either...Sh...). After landing in Athens, I may just head directly to Corfu Island (just outside of Albania in the Ionian Sea of Greece) or maybe heading directly to Tirana, Albania. There is not much information about Albania on the Internet to start with. And there is even less information about bus connection and schedule between Athens and Tirana. I heard that Greek National Raiway (OSE) operates buses between Athens and Tirana. However, I cannot find any information on OSE website. Maybe the service is already disconnected due to low demand, who know? However, I did find bus schedule between Athens and Corfu (www.ktel.gr) and I'm sure there is ferry between Corfu and Saranda, Albania. So how should I travel? Still not certain even on my departing day.

Usually I get nervous before I leave for my trip and sometimes even trying to delay the whole trip. I did delay my trip for 3 days for my "First Balkan Trip" in May and it brought some disastrous results. Unfortunately, in that three short days, there were some unpleasant things happened. If I had left as scheduled, these things might never had have chance to arise. Many things from that disastrous three days remain unresolved yet..whatever.

So I hope, no matter what, I don't want to change my trip plan easily this time.

Eastern Europe Grand Journey Summer 2006 - Prologue

There are two parts of this journey: The first part "The Western Balkan Trip," I traveled mainly in the former Yugoslav republics, with the tour operator "Intrepid Travel". After the Intrepid tour was over, I also traveled backpacking in Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy (only Venice).
After an unpleasant interview in the US in mid-June, I decided to return to the Eastern Europe to continue my journey. This second part of tour was completely solo and independent. It was not easy since I am not a very outgoing person. I did not meet as many fellow travelers as I hoped. Also very unfortunately, my camera and digital camcorder were stolen on a night train from Poland to Romania (though they were stolen when this train was passing by Hungary) Warning: Do not take night train in these Eastern European countries if you can!The conductor and the custom officers are not even helpful once any bad thing happens!
Anyway, traveling in Eastern Europe was a mostly challenging but rewarding experience. Since my memory card was lost together with the stolen camera, I did not have too many pictures to post here for the seocond part of the journey. But I still hope you can enjoy them!
